comScore Media Metrix, a leader in digital media measurement, has released its August rankings of the top U.S. streaming video properties last Thursday.
The report shows the U.S streaming audience has steadily increased each month to reach 110.3 million. About 64 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience is streaming audience (or streamer) now.
In August, 6.98 billion video streams were initiated by U.S. Internet users. The average U.S. streamer consumed 63.3 streams during August, or approximately 2 streams per day. Streamers at Fox Interactive showed the highest levels of video consumption per person at 35.5 streams per streamer, followed by Yahoo! Sites (20.6 streams per streamer) and YouTube (19.4 streams per streamer).
The unique measurement does not count the number of unique visitors to a video site, but rather measures how many people are viewing video content across the Web. The measurement does not include DRM content (either paid or encrypted) or P2P/offline video views.
A large portion of video contents is delivered not on the site that publishes them but on a site that accumulate them to generate traffic. This is especially true for YouTube and Ebaumsworld.com. As a result, new site that provides links to YouTube videos as main content is becoming very popular.
Yahoo! Sites is ranked #1 for directly accessed video contents, follow by Timer Warner Network, Microsoft Sites and Google Sites. In terms of the ability to attract streamers, Yahoo! Sites is #1 in August with 39.9 million, followed by Fox Interactive (39.5 million) and YouTube (35.5 million).
The top 10 video content providers regardless of whether they make videos or provide a mechanism to share video are: Fox Interactive, Yahoo!, YouTube, Viacom Digital, Time Warner Network, Microsoft, Google, Ebaumsworld.com, Comcast Corporation, Real.com Network.
